Okapi

Okapia johnstoni

Conservation status
Endangered (IUCN Red List)

The okapi is the giraffe’s only living relative: the two are the last members of their family. With its striped legs and dark coat, it is perfectly hidden in the dense rainforest of the northern and eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, the only country where it lives in the wild.

It is listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Forest loss and hunting have reduced its numbers, and because it is shy and hard to see, how many okapi remain is not precisely known.

Traditional uses of plants and animals are recorded as cultural knowledge and credited to the communities who hold it. They are not medical advice. Never use a plant to treat illness without a qualified health professional.
