The savanna elephant is the largest living land animal. It ranges across the grasslands and woodlands of eastern and southern Africa, and parts of West Africa.
When the IUCN first assessed Africa’s two elephant species separately, in March 2021, the savanna elephant was listed as Endangered: its numbers fell by at least 60% over 50 years. Poaching for ivory and the conversion of its habitat to farmland are the main threats.
Traditional uses of plants and animals are recorded as cultural knowledge and credited to the communities who hold it. They are not medical advice. Never use a plant to treat illness without a qualified health professional.
